The Difference between YOU and your ILLNESS

You are not your illness.

I’m sure you’ve heard this before. You might have even heard it numerous times. But have you really stopped to think what it means?

You are not your illness.

Think about that. Just because you’re struggling right now, it doesn’t mean that you’re a horrible person. If you have dark thoughts, they are likely not yours. They belong to the illness. When my brain comes up with a scenario where everyone in my entire family dies, that image doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to my anxiety. That’s what thought it up and I don’t have to own it.

You are not your illness.

You don’t have to own anything your illness comes up with. Whether it’s anxiety induced fear, or depression induced self-esteem issues, you don’t have to own it. You are an amazing person. The likelihood of something horrible happening to everyone you love is slim and no matter how much time you spend worrying about it, nothing will change it if it does. So why not be happy? Because you’re depressed? No.

You are not your illness.

You HAVE depression, you’re not depressed. You HAVE anxiety, you’re not anxious. You HAVE bipolar disorder, you’re not bipolar. There’s a huge difference, and I believe that as you can see it, you can start changing your mental viewpoint and see the world as it is. Not as your illness wants you to see it as. Your illness lies to you. It wants to push you down. It wants to see you lie down and die. Don’t let it win.

You are not your illness.

Whether you have a mental illness or not, this should resonate with everyone. We all have dark thoughts and they are not YOU. The evil in this world – the Devil, Satan, whatever you want to call it – wants you to be pulled down and hate life and yourself. Don’t allow it!
